Group 1 (Alkali metals) and reactivity Series Flashcards
What are the observations of sodium, potassium and lithium?
- bubbles/effervesence
- metal changes shape/melts
- metal floats/moves across the surface of the water
- metal gets smaller/disappears
Is metal hydroxide an acid or alkaline?
An alkaline
What is the most reactive out of sodium, potassium and lithium?
Potassium
What happens when the group is descended?
The reaction with air and water becomes faster.
What gas is always produced with the reactions?
Hydrogen
What flame is produced with potassium?
Lilac
Why do elements in group 1 react similarly?
They all have one electron in their outer shell
What happens as the outer shell electron gets further from the nucleus?
So it’s less attracted to the nucleus and more easily lost.
What reacts quickly with cold water?
K, Na,Li and Ca
What is the word equation for the magnesium and steam?
magnesium + steam —> magnesium oxide + hydrogen
What does magnesium and steam produce?
a bright white light, white solid and a flammable gas.
What does a more reactive element do?
Displaces a less reactive element from a solution of one of it’s salt.
What is the order reactivity series?
- Potassium 2. Sodium 3. Lithium 4. Calcium 5. Magnesium 6. Aluminium 7. Zinc 8. Copper 9. Silver 10. Gold
What is rust?
It is hydrated iron oxide (Fe203)
What does rusting require?
Water and oxygen
