Group 1:Alkali Metals Flashcards
Which is the most dense?
Rubidium
Which one is the most reactive?
Rubidium
Describe and explain trend in reactivity of alkali metals:
Reactivity decreases down the group because the outer electron is further away from the nucleus because their is more shielding so it’s easier to loose ( don’t ask it doesn’t make sense xxx)
How many electrons are on the outer shell?
1
What happens when a alkali metal reacts with water?
The metal floats on the top of the water and moves around quickly fizzing and bubbling then it disappears completely.
> hydrogen is produced aswell as a metal hydroxide.
What do alkali metals and non metals react to produce?
White or colourless ionic compounds.
Eg: sodium and chloride
What is the word equation for sodium + water ?
Sodium + water > sodium hydroxide+ hydrogen
What are the properties of alkali metals?
Soft and easy to cut
Low melting points
Top layer reacts with oxygen in the air to form a metal oxide
What is the most reactive element?
Caesium
What are the overall trends of the group?
Increased reactivity
Lower melting and boiling points
Higher atomic mass
Reaction with group 1 element and water?
Metal+ water> metal hydroxide+ hydrogen
