Group 1 Flashcards
What are the physical properties of alkali metals?
Alkali metals are reactive, soft and have low densities.
They all have one electron in their outer shell.
What are the trends of alkali metals?
alkali metals increase in reactivity as you go down the group .They have lower melting and boiling points as you go down the group and have a higher relative atomic mass.
What do group 1 elements form ions with easily?
Group 7 elements as group 1 needs to lose an electron and group 7 needs to gain one.
How do alkali metals react with water?
They react vigorously to produce hydrogen gas and metal hydroxides.
the chemical equation being: sodium +water —-> sodium hydroxide +hydrogen
How do alkali metals react with chlorine?
React vigorously : sodium + chlorine —–> sodium chloride
What are the physical differences between transition and group 1 metals?
group 1 metals are soft ,much less dense and much more reactive than transition metals.
