Q

Give some things that group 0 elements have in common

A
  • all unreactive
  • all gases at room temperature
  • don’t bond with other atoms
  • full outer shell
  • used in lighting - eg neon

Q

Why are group 0 elements often used for lighting?

A

They are safe because they are so unreactive. Neon, for example, has no known reactions.

Q

Why do the boiling points of group 0 increase as you go down the group?

A

As you go down, the atomic mass increases- and when the atom is bigger, it has greater intermolecular forces and so it takes more energy to be pulled apart.

Q

Why are group 0 so unreactive?

A

They have a full outer shell, so they can’t bond or react with other elements since it can’t gain an electron.
