Group 0 - noble gases Flashcards
1
Q
Group 0 are known as what?
A
the noble gases
2
Q
Give some things that group 0 elements have in common
A
- all unreactive
- all gases at room temperature
- don’t bond with other atoms
- full outer shell
- used in lighting - eg neon
3
Q
Why are group 0 elements often used for lighting?
A
They are safe because they are so unreactive. Neon, for example, has no known reactions.
4
Q
As you go down group zero, what happens?
A
- atomic mass increases
- melting and boiling points increase
5
Q
Why do the boiling points of group 0 increase as you go down the group?
A
As you go down, the atomic mass increases- and when the atom is bigger, it has greater intermolecular forces and so it takes more energy to be pulled apart.
6
Q
Why are group 0 so unreactive?
A
They have a full outer shell, so they can’t bond or react with other elements since it can’t gain an electron.
