Groundwater Vocabulary Flashcards
Surface Water
water found on the surface of the earth
watershed
the region of land that supplies water to a river system (a river and all its tributaries together)
runoff
rainwater that does not soak into the ground; it flows down land forms where it collects in bodies of water on earth’s surface
groundwater
water found in the open spaces (pores) of soil and rock beneath the surface of the earth
permeable rock
rock that contains many well-connected pores and allows groundwater to flow through it
impermeable
rock
rock that has no interconnected pores and does not let groundwater flow through it
porosity
the amount of space between the particles that make up the rock
aquifer
a rock layer that stores ground water and allows it to flow
water table
the top surface of the zone of saturation; it is sometimes underground and sometimes above ground
recharge zone
the ground surface where water enters an aquifer
saturation zone
below the water table where all spaces not filled with solid material fill with water
zone of aeration
the upper portion of soil and rock that can be temporarily filled with water as the water enters the ground, but then moves deeper
point-source
water pollution
a single identifiable and localized source of water pollution, waste water discharge into a stream
non-point source
water pollution
pollutants introduced into surface or ground water that are without a specific location source, such as water flowing over a lawn that has been fertilized and into a drain
