Groundwater Flashcards
What is Porosity?
Void Volume / Total Volume
What is permeability?
- the capacity of rock/soil to allow fluid to pass through it
What is porous rock?
a rock that holds water
what is permeable rock?
a rock that allows water to flow easily through it
what is impermeable rock?
a rock that does not allow water to flow through it easily
Groundwater is formed by ______________
infiltration of rain water through soils
what is aquifer?
A body of saturated rock or sediment through which water can move easily
what is unconfined aquifer?
A body of material that has uniform permeability to the
surface in both recharge and discharge areas.
what is confined aquifer?
a permeable unit that is bound above and below by
impermeable layers that restrict the flow of water
what is aquitards?
compacted layers of clay, silt or rock that retard water flow
underground with <1% porosity
what is aquicludes/aquifuge?
geological material through which zero flow occurs
what is influent stream?
a stream that lies above the water table and may recharge the ground water
what is effluent stream?
where groundwater discharges to the stream on surface
what is Recharge?
the infiltration of water into subsurface materials
what is Discharge?
the exit of groundwater to the surface
