Gross Motor Flashcards
Learning the median & limit age with Gross Motor Development.
What pattern does motor development generally follows in relation to maturation of the CNS and myelination?
Head to toe.
When does the process of myelination of the brain begin and when does it generally end?
It begins in utero and most occurs in the first 2 years of life, allowing rapid motor development. (Lissauer, p.29)
How is the myelination in the frontal lobe different? When is it complete?
Frontal lobes myelination only completely during adolescence. (Lissauer, p.29)
When can we stop adjusting for prematurity?
Correction is not required after about 2 years of age when the number of weeks early the child was born no longer represents a significant proportion of the child’s life. (Lissauer, p.29)
What are the four functional areas of child development and their core features?
Gross motor. Vision and Fine motor. Hearing, Speech and Language. Social, Emotional and Behavioural.
What gross motor development is expected at 6-8 weeks of age (median)?
Ability to lift head to 45 degrees in prone.
What gross motor development is expected at 6-8 months of age (median)?
Sits without support. At 6 month with round back. At 8 months with straight back.
What gross motor development is expected at 8-9 months of age (median)?
Crawling.
What gross motor development is expected at 10 months of age (median)?
Stands independently, cruises around furniture.
What gross motor development is expected at 12 months of age (median)?
Walks unsteadily, broad gait, hands apart. (Chucky walk).
What gross motor development is expected at 15 months of age (median)?
Walks steadily.
When do the postural reflexes appear?
Around 6 months of age as the postural reflexes begin to emerge for sitting unsupported and standing.
