Groove Welds 1G, 2G, 3G Flashcards
What is the recommended joint preparation for a 1G, 2G, or 3G weld without backing?
Both edges are bevelled to 30 degrees, with a 60 degree included angle. The land and gap are to match each other. Can be from 3/32”-1-8” (2.5mm - 3.2mm)
Note about 2G, plates are to have some preset. 3-4 degrees.
How long can you tacks be for a 1G, 2G, or 3G weld?
1/4” - 3/8” (6mm - 10mm)
For a 1G weld, what should your electrode inclination be?
0-10 degrees backhand for all passes
For a 1G weld, what is your electrode angle?
It should be 1/2 of the included joint angle (90 degrees)
How many pass(es) can you complete on a 1G?
You can do either 3 or 4
How do you know if you’ve achieved full penetration while welding a groove weld?
By maintaining a continuous keyhole and a fluid puddle.
What type of bead is produced with an electrode inclination of 90 degrees?
A medium width bead
Which position out of 1G, 2G, or 3G is subject to the most distortion?
2G, since there are more passes than other positions
For a 2G weld, what should your electrode angle be?
Remember you are competing with gravity. You must account for this while welding. Theoretically it would be 1/2 of the joint angle, but you need to account for this gravity.
ANSWER: An adjustment of 5 - 10 degrees may be required
Which current setting and arc length will lead to slag entrapment?
Low heat setting with a long arc leads to trapped slag.
What is the electrode inclination and electrode angle for a 3G weld?
Electrode inclination: 0-10 degrees backhand OR forehand
Electrode angle: 1/2 the included joint angle
