Grooming tools & uses Flashcards
Slicker brush
Helps to separate the coat. Removes undercoat. Helps to ease tangles and mats.
Good for everyday grooming, soft coats of puppies, elderly dogs and those with sensitive skin. Ideal for dense double coats and curly, wavy and straight coats.
Amplifier firm slicker brush
Dual purpose - removes mats, curved shape helps the pins penetrate the coat to remove matts, tangles and undercoat. Also adds volume on coarse coated breeds due to unique design. Use on matted coats of any type and for adding volume on coarse coated breeds like heavy coated poodles.
Shedding Blade
Removes loose coat without damaging live hairs. Use on a dry coat or to remove excess water from a wet coat. Can be used in a loop or separate the handle and use as a single blade with both hands. Good for removing loose hair from short or double coated dogs.
Furminator
Main purpose is to remove undercoat. Can help reduce tram lines after clipping giving a smoother finish. Keep the handle parallel with the dogs body. Ideal for dogs who typically shed twice a year in spring and autumn. Use on short and double coats.
Stripping knife
For stripping a coat. Used to strip out loose harsh top coat. Wire coated dogs.
Stripping/Grooming stone
Used for removing dead, blown hairs. Use the stone like a brush to remove dead hair and dirt. Hold between fingers and thumb, grasp a few hairs between the thumb and the stone and gently pull hairs out in the direction of hair growth. Use on wire coats.
Chalk
White chalk powder used during hand stripping for better grip. Apply to hands or the dogs dry coat to help get a firm grip. Use on wire coated dogs.
Dematting tool, blade, breaker or splitter
Long rugged teeth help break through mats and tangles with ease and without losing length. Very sharp - must know where it is being placed to prevent injury. Use on coats with length.
Les Pooch Brush
Flexible centre and long pins allows the brush to contour the dogs body and reach deep down to the skin. Demats and detangles with no major discomfort and in most cases without having to cut the mat. Ideal for dense double coated dogs and coats that are curly, wavy and straight. Not advisable on smooth coated or corded dogs.
Undercoat Rake
Removes loose fur from the undercoat, while leaving a healthy topcoat. With rotating pins the groomer will need to go over the area a few times. Use on double coats. Ensure the pins match hair length and density.
Coat King
Comes with a variety of blades: 8, 12, 16 and 20. Use less blades (8) on on heavier double dense coats. More blades (20) on finer coats like spaniels and setters. Useful for dense areas like around the rough, the neck and chest area. Cuts, strips and combs in one time saving step.
Rubber brush/rubber curry comb
Massages the skin and loosens dead hair. Good for all parts of the body, cheeks and up and down the limbs. Can get deeper into the coat than a hound glove. Very good for fine coated dogs. Smooth coats and short coats. Can be used as a shampoo tool in the bath.
Mitt/hound glove
Removes dirt, dust and dead hair. Use on smooth and shorter coats. Massaging will stimulate the skin bringing blood to the surface supplying nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles.
Pin brush
Pins prevent the hairs from breaking ideal for long flowing coats. Penetrates the coat and stimulates the skin. Use on long coats. Rounded pin heads prevent scratching the skin.
Bristle brush
Finishing brush to help spread the coat oils up the hair shaft which gives the coat its shine. Only suitable for shorter, smooth coats which must be dry. Can also be used on a dry coat to remove dry mud and dandruff.
