Childhood bereavement • Finality of death is not understood by children under 10 yrs • Often absorb distress of others • Need honesty
Elderly
• Concurrent losses

Traumatic death
• sudden death or violence
• may experience flashbacks, intrusive thoughts,
anxiety, avoidance responses
• can result in acute stress disorder or post

assessment & intervention

what is Respite care
– short term stay to provide family
relief for relatives caring for an elderly person in
their home. It enables the family to go away on
holidays

– similar to retirement
village or low level hostel care where the
individual or couples continue to live
independently with assistance of government
funded Community Aged Care Packages (CACPs)
(e.g., cleaning, laundry services, ADL’s)
what is Nursing Home
– provided for individuals unable to
function independently because of physical and or mental
impairments. Residents require 24 nursing hour care.
Nursing Homes are required to have a registered nurse on
site 24 hours/day
Physical abuse
: e.g. bruises, lacerations, weight loss,
facial swelling, missing teeth, pain, restricted
movements, cringing, acting fearful etc.
• Psychological / emotional abuse
: language or actions
designed to intimidate another person e.g.
Intimidation, humiliation, harassment, threats
• Sexual abuse (assault)
