Greenhouse gases and climate changes Flashcards

1
Q

Can you give examples of greenhouse gases and what do they act as?

A

Carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour. They act as a insulating layers in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Q

What are the benefits of the greenhouse gases?

A

Allows the earth to be warm enough to support life and prevents the earth from becoming too cold for most organisms to survive.

Q

What is the difference between all particles and greenhouse gases?

A

All particles absorb certain frequencies of radiation, whereas greenhouse gases don’t absorb the incoming short wavelength radiation from the sun. However, they do absorb the long wavelength radiation that gets reflected back off the earth.

Q

What is the long-wave radiation and what does it cause?

A

A thermal radiation, which causes the warming of the surface of the Earth(greenhouse effect)

Q

Can you give examples of human activity that affect the amount greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?

A

Deforestation:If there’s fewer trees, which means less CO2 is removed from the atmosphere via photosynthesis.
Burning of fossil fuels:Carbon that was ‘locked up’ in these fuels is released as C02.
Agriculture:More farm animals produce more methane through their digestive processes.
Creating waste:more landfill sites and waste from agriculture, which means more CO2 and methane is released by decomposition of waste.

Q

Evidence have been peer-reviewed,to agree that extra carbon dioxide from the human activity causes climate changed, but why?

A

So society knows that the information out there is reliable.

Q

Why is it hard to fully understand the Earth’s climate and what has it lead to?

A

It’s so complex and there are so many variables, that’s hard to make a model that isn’t oversimplified.
This has lead to speculation, particularly the media.Where stories may be biased or only gives some information.
