Greenhouse gas ocean warming Flashcards
What does the ocean do for us?
- produces more than half of the oxygen on the planet
- main food source for over a billion ppl
- employment for over 200 million ppl
what can be said about the protection of our ocean (large scale)
- no government body designated with control
- no authority to police intn’l waters unless crime occurs
- every coastal country ‘owns’ some ocean.
who is monitoring our oceans?
- ICPP (intergovnernmental panel of climate change)
- DFO
- NOAA, EPA
- NIWA new zealand
What are the greenhouse gases?
- water vapor
- carbon dioxide
- methane
- nitrous oxide
- ozone
which two gases are technically greenhouse but typically ignored, and why?
CO, HCl.
-short lived
what is water vapor’s role in relation to greenhouse gases?
- the amount of WV in the atmosphere is actually controlled by (does not control) temperature
- warm temp means more WV
- WV now accounts for 60% of warming effect of greenhouse gases
what is our worst greenhouse gas in volume produced?
CO2
GWP: what is the acrynym and what is ittttttt
- global warming potential
- a measure of the warming potential of a gas compared to CO2 over 100 years
in 2014 by how much did global CO2 levels exceed that of the beginning of the industrial revolution?
43%
what is the second most prevalent greenhouse gas? what percentage of emissions in the US?
methane
10%
what is the main source of methane?
agriculture
-also natural gas industry
how long does methane stay in the atmosphere?
a decade
what is the third most important greenhouse gas?
ozone
by how much have ozone levels raised since pre-industrial times?
by 30%, but at ground level. (levels higher up are dropping)
how is ozone reported for GWP?
its not, but because it interacts with methane it is included in the GWP for methane
what is another way, other than GWP, to measure global warming potential?
ODP - ozone depletion potential
is it better to lose or gain ozone?
neither. both cases are bad.
- helps break down some greenhouse gases
- works with methane to destroy
what is the nitrous oxide effects?
how long does it stay in the atmosphere?
1kg is equal to almost 300kg of CO2
->100yr
why do greenhouse gases cause the world to heat up?
the gases capture infrared radiation from the sun that would have been reflected into space
what are the problems associated with oceanic warming?
- rising sea levels (zonation)
- thermal challenge to marine organisms
Where is the water coming from (oceanic water level rise)
- thermal expansion of water (increased volume, decreased density)
- melting ice (glaciers and polar caps, ice sheets from greenland and antartica)
T/F:
organisms will move to keep within their thermal optima
F
T/F:
thermal optima are extremely different for different organisms
T
T/F:
many marine organisms cannot move at the rate at which the oceans are heating
T
T/F:
overall thermal effects do not describe local conditions
