Green Plants as Organisms 3abcde. Flashcards
What is the full word equation for photosynthesis?
What is needed for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide, water and light. (Chlorophyll too but the plants have that)
What is produced in photosynthesis?
Glucose and oxygen
How could you prove that gas is produced in photosynthesis?
Put pond weed under an inverted funnel and test tube to collect the gas.
How can you prove that the gas collected from photosynthesizing pond weed is oxygen?
Put a glowing split in a test tube of the gas, it will relight if it is oxygen.
Other minerals are needed by plants, name the two main ones and say why they are needed.
Nitrogen (often supplied as nitrates) needed for growth and magnesium is needed for chlorophyll.
How could you tell if a plant was lacking magnesium?
Its leaves would turn yellow.
How could you tell if a plant was lacking nitrates?
Its growth would be stunted. (Small)
How do water and minerals enter plants?
They are absorbed at the roots.
How are root cells adapted to maximise absorption?
They have root hairs which increase surface area.
Plants make oxygen but they also need it…why?
For respiration. They respire 24hrs a day, just like us.
What three external factors control the rate of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide levels, light levels and temperature.
Where do plants get minerals like magnesium and nitrates from?
The soil.
What process converts carbon dioxide in the air into carbon (biomass) within living things?
Photosyntheis. (Glucose contains carbon and this is made in photosynthesis)
Other than in living things how can carbon be stored in the environment?
In fossil fuels and dissolved in the oceans.
