Green Generation Ecosystem Vocab Flashcards
Species
A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce
Population
All the members of one species living in an particular area are referred to as a population
Community
All the different populations that live together in an area
Ecosystem
The community of organisms that live in a particular area along with the non-living (abiotic) environment
Biotic Factors
The parts of a habitat that are living, or once were living, and interact with an organism
Abiotic factors
The non-living parts of an organisms habitat.
Autotrophs
Organisms that are able to produce their own food through processes of photosynthesis or chemosythesis (i.e. plants)
Heterotrophs
Organisms that are unable to produce their own food and receive energy by consuming other organisms.
Herbivore
A heterotroph that only consumes plants
Carnivore
A heterotroph that only consumes other heterotrophs
Omnivore
A heterotroph that consumes both autotrophs and heterotrophs
Detritivore
A heterotroph that consumes dead or decaying organisms
Decomposer
A heterotroph that breaks down dead or decaying organisms
The Hydrologic Cycle
The cycle in which the water circulates through the atmosphere, bodies of water, organisms, and the soil
The Carbon Cycle
The circulation of carbon in different chemical forms (the exchange of carbon between the organisms and the environment)
