Green chemistry Flashcards
What is the name for large scale making and small scale making of things? Give examples for each
Bulk means made on a large scale (ammonia, sufuric acid, sodium hydroxide)
Fine means made on a small scale (drugs, food additives, fragrances)
What stages does the production of chemicals involve?
a. the preparation of feedstocks
b. synthesis
c. separation of products
d. handling of by-products and wastes
e. the monitoring of purity
What does the sustainability of chemical production depend on?
a. whether or not the feedstock is renewable
b. the atom economy
c. the nature and amount of by-products or wastes and what happens to them
d. the energy inputs or outputs
e. the environmental impact
f. the health and safety risks
g. the social and economic benefits
What does the term activation energy refer to?
The amount of energy require to break the bonds of reactants and start a reaction
How does a catalyst affect the activation energy?
It provides an alternate route for reaction in that it allows the reaction to happen with a lower activation energy, reducing costs
What conditions are required for enzyme catalysts to work?
Enzymes are denatured due to changes in their conditions, therefore temperature cannot rise too high and the pH level must not become to extreme.
