Polis
The greek word for a city-state
Acropolis
A high hill upon which a greek fortress was built.
Democracy
A type of government in which people rule themselves
Aristocracy
Government that is made up of a small group of people from the highest social class in society
Citizens
A person who has the right to participate in government.
Tyrant
An Ancient Greek leader who held power through the use of force.
Pericles
He lead government from about 460 BCE until his death in 429 BCE. Pericles encouraged the people of Athens to introduce democracy into other parts of Greece.
Alliance
An agreement to work together
Peloponnesian War
A war between Athens and Sparta in 420 BCE.
Mythology
Stories about gods and heroes that try and explain how the world works.
Homer
He is considered the greatest poet of the ancient world. According to ancient legend, Homer was blind and recited “Iliad” and the “Odyessey” aloud.
Aesop
He wrote fables that offered a lesson about the choices people make in their lives.
Fables
A short story that teaches a lesson or gives advice on how to live.
Socrates
He believed that people never stopped looking for knowledge.
Plato
He was a student of Socrates. He created a school to which students, philosophers, and scientists could come to discuss ideas.
Aristotle
He was a student of Plato. He taught that people should live the lives of moderation, or balance. For example, people should not be greedy, but neither should they give away everything they own. Instead, they need to find a balance between the two extremes.
Reason
Clear and ordered thinking.
Euclid
He was intrested in geometrey. Euclid is considered one of the world’s greatest mathmaticians. He wrote about the relationship between mathmatics and other fields, including astronomy and music. But it is for geometrey he is best known.
Hippocrates
He was the greatest Greek doctor. He wanted to figure out what caused diseases so he could better treat them. Hippocrates is better known today, though, for his ideas on how doctors should behave.
