Thermopylae

Mostly Spartan forces and was led by Leonidas
Greeks had 7k soldiers while Xerxes had around 250K
There was debates on where the battle should take place
A betrayer called Ephialtes told the Persians of a certain pass
Leonidas retreated his troops on the final day due to different conflicting reasons, loss of hope or afraid, he however died

A

Happened at the same time as Thermopylae
inconclusive naval arrangements
Persians sent 200 ships in hopes of trapping the Greeks but Thermistocles brought in a squadron
They quickly retreated when hope was lost

Battle of Salamis

A

Naval battle between Greek and Persia 480 after Thermopylae
Greeks regrouped at Salamis
Athens had evacuated their ppl due to Persian attacks there
Thermistocles wanted to fight at Salamis, Adeimantus, Corinthian opposed him but T won after threatening him
He wrote that Corinth went away but some say was false- he was anti-Corinth

A

479, Mardonius charges towards Athens to discover it was evacuated
Athens asked for help from Sparta against them and they led to attack
Herodotus applauds Pausanias for this victory
