The hero experiences a “dark night of the soul”.
Belly of the Whale
A series of obstacles a hero must face.
Road of Trials.
A wise or magical woman gives advice or guidance.
Meeting with a Goddess.
Hero must reconcile difficult relationship with father figure.
Atonement with Father.
The hero recognizes true identity and gains self knowledge.
Apotheosis.
Hero has survived death, overcome his greatest fear, and now earns the award he sought.
Ultimate Boon.
The hero must recommit to completing the journey and travel the road back to the Ordinary World. “How can I go back?”
Road Back.
Hero returns to his ordinary world.
Crossing the Return Threshold.
The hero has mastered both his ordinary world and his special world.
Mastery of Two Worlds.
Having faced evil and gained self-knowledge, the hero is no longer fearful.
Freedom to Live
