Monarchy
A government ruled by a king or queen
Oligarchy
A government ruled by a few powerful people
Democracy
A government in which power is held by the people, who exercise power directly or through elected representatives
Tyranny
Rule by someone who gains power illegally
City-State
A city that controls itself and its surrounding territory and does not answer to any higher authority
Structure of government in Ancient Athens
- Assembly - Created laws, votes by every citizen in Athens
- Council of 500 - Conducted daily business, consisted of 500 randomly selected citizens
- The Courts - Heard court cases, consisted of 500 randomly selected citizens
Structure of government in Ancient Sparta
- Assembly - Consisted of all citizens but largely had no power
- Council of Elders - Consisted of 28 members who determined what laws could be voted on and could also veto laws
- Two Kings - Members of the Council of Elders. Largely powerless other than being able to vote with the other 28 members of the Council.
Treatment of Women in Ancient Sparta
- Couldn’t vote or participate in government.
- Received education in self defense and combat
- Could own some property and money
- Acted as head of household when husband was away at war

Other major city-states
Corinth - Major trade city known for its architecture and developing its own currency. Run by a monarchy.
Thebes - City-state known as the birthplace of Hercules in Greek mythology. Defeated the city-state of Sparta.
Argos - Major military power that ruled by the tyrant dictator Pheidon. Known for creating its own weights and measures.
Delphi - The religious, educational, and artistic center of Greece. Famous for the Oracle of Delphi who would give guidance to those who visited her.
Rhodes - A city famous for its shipbuilders and the Colossus of Rhodes, which stood over its harbor. Remained an important city during the time of the Roman Empire.
