What is Zeus the god of?
King of the gods. Was seen as the keeper of justice, god of the skies and the fate of men.
How do you recognise Zeus?
Bearded man wielding a lightning bolt. Shown holding an eagle or seated on a throne with a sceptre.
What is Poseidon the god of?
God of the sea, earthquakes and horses.
How do you recognise Poseidon?
Typically represented as a bearded man holding a trident. Also shown with anything to do with the sea.
What is Hades the god of?
Hades was a chthonic deity and ruler of the underworld.
How do you recognise Hades?
Typically represented with a cornucopia. He is also often depicted with his wife Persephone.
What is Hera the god of?
Was the queen of the gods and responsible for marriage, woman, childbirth and the family.
How do you recognise Hera?
Typically represented wearing a diadem.
What is Athena the god of?
Goddess of war and wisdom.
How do you recognise Athena?
Frequently depicted with an owl; as she is the goddess of war and military intelligence she is depicted with a helmet, spear and the aegis. Also depicted with Nike - the winged goddess of victory.
What is the epithet of Athena?
Parthenos - ‘the virgin’
What is Demeter the god of?
Goddess of agriculture and the harvest.
How do you recognise Demeter?
Wearing a diadem and holding a bundle of wheat, grain or flowers.
