Timé
Honor and status.
The honour (both abstract and physical in form of gifts) due to heroes in accordance to their Kleos.
Diké
Was the goddess of justice, fair judgments and rights established by custom and law.
Hubris
Overweening pride, self-confidence, superciliousness, or arrogance, often resulting in fatal retribution.
Moira
The personification of fate.
Nemesis
Unavoidable destiny, the Gods are in control of your fate.
Xenia and its process
Theoxening Narrative?
Hospitality or “Guest friendship”.
Xenia encourages trade, long term benefits include financial, social and cultural stability.
The host receives news about the world from guests.
The Process of Xenia
Host
1) Welcome guests
2) Food/Bath/Place to stay
3) No questions until step 1-2 is completed
4) Aid and assist them in their onwards journey.
5) Gives them a gift.
Guest
1) Dont be unbearable and a burden. E.g. overstaying your visit.
2) Gift the host with stories
3) Offer the same treament to the host
Class system : Peasants shouldnt be knocking on the doors of nobles.
Theoxening Narrative : Mythical/Cultural stories involving a stranger being mistreated by a host, but the guest is a God, the host is punished.
Nostos
Homecoming by ship.
Akhos
Grief over loss of time.
Philoi
Family and friends, including those dead or absent.
Arété
Virtue. Excellence. The exceptional qualities of a Hero.
Most articulated value in Greek Culture.
“Being the best, you can be.”
Aidos
Lack of shame or restraint.
Suitors perished because of their greed.
Dolos
Cunning, trickery, stratagem.
