Great vessels of the heart Flashcards
What is the function of the aorta?
Carry oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body.
What are the different sections of the aorta?
1st - Ascending aorta - lies within pericardium - coronary arteries branch from here
2nd - Arch of the aorta
3rd - After the arch becomes the descending aorta
What are the three branches off the arch of the aorta?
- Brachiocephalic trunk
- Left common carotid artery
- Left subclavian artery
What is the function of the pulmonary arteries?
Receive deoxygenated blood from right ventricle and deliver it to the lungs
What separates the pulmonary trunk form the right ventricle?
The pulmonary valve
What is the pathway of the pulmonary trunk?
Located anteriorly and medially to the right atrium, continues upwards and overs the root of the aorta passing posteriorly.
At what level does the pulmonary trunk split?
At the level of T5 - T6.
What happens to the pulmonary trunk at the level of T5/T6?
Splits into two branches with one branch going into left lung and splitting into two and the other going into the right lung and splitting into two.
