Gatsby’s rise to wealth and fame
- Gatsby had grown up not from money but was dedicated to become wealthy and successful. He got his fortune from illegal bootlegging.
Gastby’s humble beginnings as James Gatz
- Gatsby came from parents who were farmers and didn’t get much money but he was determined to become successful and wealthy. He was raised and born in North Dakota and went to school at St. Olaf college located in Minnesota.
- His original name was James Gatz but had changed it to Gatsby at the age of 17.
Gatsby’s mentor Dan Cody a wealthy copper mogul, takes him under his wing
- Gatsby worked on Lake Superior in the summer where he fished for salmon and dug for clams. He saw a yacht owned by Dan Cody, a wealthy copper mogul, and rowed out to warn him about an impending storm. Cody took Gatsby in on his yacht, who gave his name as Jay Gatsby and Gatsby became his personal assistant.
- Traveling with Cody, Gatsby fell in love with wealth and luxury.
Cody was a heavy drinker and it was Gatsby’s job to look after him This gave Gatsby the dangers of alcohol and convinced him not to become a drinker himself.
Gatsby is cheated out of his inheritance by Cody’s ex-wife
- Cody had left his $25,000 inheritance for Gatsby but when Cody had died, the mistress took the money and Gatsby never received it.
- This made Gatsby want to become wealthy and successful.
Tom, Gatsby, Daisy, Nick, and Jordan all have a meeting
- Tom agrees with Daisy’s suggestion to all go to New York together. Nick rides with Jordan and Tom in Gatsby’s car and Daisy and Gatsby ride in Tom’s car.
- When Jordan, Nick and Tom need to stop for gas they learn that Wilson discovered Myrtle is cheating on him.
Tom Buchannan and Gatsby get into an altercation due to Daisy rekindling her flame with Gatsby
- Tom calls Gatsby crazy because he says Daisy does love him and he loves her too. Even though we see that Tom is unfaithful to her, he claims he still loves her. He also asks about Gatsby’s intentions for Daisy.
- Tom says that Gatsby doesn’t understand the history he and Daisy has.
- Tom also mocks Gatsby for having a habit of calling people old sport.
Tom Interrogates Gatsby in an attempt to figure out his mysterious persona
- Tom accuses Gatsby of lying about going to oxford for school but Gatsby did attend but only for a short amount of time which was very brief.
- Tom also accuses Gatsby of doing a business in bootlegging which is illegal
Due to distress Daisy accidentally kills Myrtle Wilson in a hit-and-run, who is Tom’s Mistress.
- Myrtle’s husband had locked her in a room after finding out she was having an affair with Tom and when Myrtle had seen Tom’s yellow car thinking that it was him, she ran out the room and she got hit on accident by Daisy where she died instantly.
In the beginning of chapter 6, it first started in east egg where Tom’s house is located
- Nick as the narrator is introducing the past of Gatsby. Where he went to school, where he grew up, his rise from no money to wealth and success.
Lake Superior was introduced in chapter 6 where the young Gatsby of North Dakota met Dan Cody
- These two met on Cody’s yacht in Lake superior where Cody had hired Gatsby because he like him. He was with him for 5 years.
In chapter 6 Tom and two others arrive at Gatsby’s house where Gatsby starts to make it known that he and Daisy know each other. Tom gets anxious about how they met
- Nick hasn’t seen Gatsby in awhile and when he heads home, Gatsby shows up then Tom later on with some friends, The Sloane’s.
- Gatsby says that he knows Toms wife and invites him and his friends to stay over for dinner.
In Chapter 7 it was a broiling hot summer day
- Nick takes a train to East Egg where Daisy and Tom live to have lunch with them. When he arrives there, Gatsby and Jordan are already there.
- The nurse brings in Daisy’s baby girl, Gatsby is shocked and cannot believe that the child is real as Daisy never mentioned it.
In Chapter 7, it took place in the Plaza hotel
- In this meeting, they all arrive at a Plaza Hotel where Gatsby and Daisy admit that they have been having an affair and Gatsby wants Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him, but Daisy cannot do that as it isn’t true and it crushes Gatsby.
Gatsby has been trying to win back Daisy from Tom, he has made efforts and hasn’t given up
- Gatsby lies about his past to Daisy to show her that he comes from a wealthy family to convince her that he is worthy of her and the first time that they had met in person, Gatsby had made sure everything was in order and perfect on that day for her.

In chapter 6 Daisy arrives at the party and is excited to attend such an amazing event for once
- Daisy attends the party but is miserable at it and doesn’t enjoy the party.
- Daisy feels bad for not liking the party but because she enjoyed the party more than her own life which goes to show that she isn’t happy in her life and who she is spending it with.
Daisy tells Tom that she doesn’t love him
- Even though Gatsby had wanted Daisy to tell Tom that she didn’t love him, she couldn’t get herself to say it because she did love him at times before.
Daisy tells Tom and Gatsby that she loves both of them
- At the Plaza hotel, Gatsby wants Daisy to tell Tom she never loved him but she said I did love Tom once but I also loved you.
Chapter 7: Daisy was struggling who to choose between Gatsbys and Tom
- Daisy does end up choosing Tom like how she chose him once before because the plan was to tell Tom that she and Gatsby would be together but she couldn’t end up leaving him.
Chapter 7: Daisy felt trapped in her marriage with Tom
- Daisy isn’t very happy in her marriage with Tom as he cheats on her (but she doesn’t know) and she also only married him for money and not so much for love meaning that also she must have fallen in love with him at some point she wanted him more for money.
In chapter 6, we learn that Tom and Daisy went to Gatsby’s party and acted like he was better than all of the people who attended the party
- He does this because the people who attend Gatsby’s parties are people who live in the West egg and Tom and Daisy are from the East egg, where the people there are different than the people from West egg.
In chapter 6, Nick, Gatsby, Tom, and the Sloane’s have tea at Gatsby’s house.
- Gatsby asks the Sloane’s to stay and have dinner with them but they decline and invite him over for dinner instead.
- Gatsby lets Tom knows that he also knows his wife Daisy.
In chapter 6, Tom calls Gatsby a “bootlegger” and suspects his wealth is from smuggling alcohol
- Tom says this to make Gatsby look bad in front of his wife as he has done some digging up on Gatsby after finding out he and his wife had been meeting.
- Daisy gets mad and says that Gatsby makes his money from building an empire of drug stores.
In chapter 7, Tom and Gatsby have a verbal altercation over who’s fit for Daisy’s love. Tom finds out that Daisy doesn’t love him
- Although Gatsby tells Daisy that she doesn’t love Tom she said she had loved them both before meaning she now no longer loves Tom but did once love him.
