Describe Compeyson

A

Compeyson is the second convict that Pip saw on the marshes. He conned Miss Havisham by working with her half brother Arther. Compeyson was killed by Magwitch on the water.

A

Describe Mr. Wopsle

A

Mr. Wopsle was a church clerk. He would have been a church minister if he was of a higher social class. He was a bad actor, which showed what Dickens thinks of religion. He quit clerking to become an actor. He frequently messed up lines and was basically a bubble head.

Describe Herbert Pocket

A

Herbert was the pale young man who challenged Pip to a fight. Later he becomes good friends with Pip. Pip paid money to help Herbert’s business. Herbert’s girlfriend is Clara. Later Pip works with Herbert and they moved to Cairo.

Describe Pip’s story

A

Pip was a young orphan who was raised by his sister and by Joe and had an encounter with a convict when he was young. He was invited to entertain Miss Havisham and he met Estela there. He had a crush on her but was never happy with her. Later Pip receives Great Expectations and moves to London with Jaggers. He lived in varying degrees of unhappiness. Near the end of the story he finds out that Magwitch (the convict he had an encounter with)was his benefactor. He then refused to use the money he was offered, but he tried to hide Magwitch. Magwitch was discovered and Pip tried to get him to safety in another country. Pip failed and the police took Magwitch, who died in jail. At that point Pip lost his expectations he became very ill. Joe helped him out then. Pip decided to work with Herbert, and they moved to Cairo.

Describe Estela

A

Estela was about Pip’s age. She’s the daughter of Magwitch and Clara. She was removed from her family from Jaggers who was trying to save her from becoming a convict. Miss Havisham adopted her, and raised her to be cold and distant. Estela married Drummel, was abused, and became humble at the end of the book.

Describe Mathew Pocket

A

Mathew is a relative of Miss Havisham’s and tried to stop her from being conned by Magwitch. Miss Havisham freaked out and they lost communication, but she gave him lots of money from her will. Mathew was Pip’s tutor. He also really loves his wife

A

Sara Pocket enjoys being told how good she is. She’s related to someone with a title and doesn’t have one because she married Mathew (but she feels like she desirves one). She wants to pocket money.

Describe Jaggers

A

He was Pip’s second guardian, but he only did that because he was paid to do it. He is extremely money driven and thinks that money is the best thing in the world. He is a lawyer and doesn’t care what the truth is as long as he gets paid. He represents Dickens view on the Judicial system because of those things. He is sickened by the thought of children falsely being tried,arrested, and/ or hanged and washes his hands after work every day because he feels guilty because of the filth he is involved in.

A

Wemmik is Jaggers assistant. He acts differently at work than at his home. He marries Miss Skiffens. He treats people with dignity.

Describe Biddy

A

Biddy was Pip’s first teacher. She came over to help Mrs. Joe after she had been attacked. She was always fairly patient with Pip even when he was acting like he was above her.

A

He was a student at the same time and place as Pip and Startop. Drummel represents poor morals. He laughed at Startop when Startop tried to give him money. Jaggers described him as a spider. He married and abused Estela. He died from an accident relating to a hoarse that he treated cruelly.

Orluck represents how people become criminals. Orluck worked with Joe at the forge. Orluck got into an argument with Mrs. Joe and killed her because of it. Orluck had a crush on Biddy, Pip paid to keep him away from her and then Orluck tried to kill him.

Arther’s father gave him money and he blew through it fast. Arther was “cut out of the will” and sought out Compeyson, a con man, to get money from his half sister, Miss Havisham.

A

Mollie thought that her husband, Magwithch, was involved with another lady and Mollie killed that lady. She then threatened to kill their daughter, Estela, to try to hurt Magwitch. Mollie was tryed, but Jaggers took the case and won. Mollie was scared that she would become like that again, so Jaggers hired her to be his servant.
