FERA- Federal Emergency Relief Administration
Offered grants of federal money to states and local governments that were operating soup kitchens and other forms of relief
PWA- Public Works Administration
Allotted money to state and local governments for building roads, bridges, dams and other public works. Source of thousands of jobs.
CCC- Civilian Conservation Corps
Employed young men on projects on federal lands and paid their families sma;; monthly sums
TVA- Tennessee Valley Authority
Experiment in regional development and public planning. Hired thousands of people in the poorest region, Tennessee Valley, to build dams, operate power plants control flooding, etc. Sold electricity to residents of the region at rates that were well below those previously charged.
AAA- Agricultural Adjustment Administration
Encouraged farmers to reduce production (and boost prices), by offering to pay government subsidies for every acre they plowed under
CWA- Civil Works Administration
Added to the PWA for creating jobs. Hired laborers for temporary construction projects sponsored by federal government
SEC- Securities and Exchange Comission
Created to regulate the stock market and place strict limits on the kind of speculative practices that led to the Wall Street Crash in 1929. Also required full audits and financial disclosure by companies to protect from fraud
FHA- Federal Housing Administration
Gave both the construction industry and homeowners a boost by insuring bank loans for building new houses and repairing old ones
FDIC- Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
Guaranteed individual bank deposits, gold standard was restricted to international transactions and Americans couldn’t exchange their dollars for gold
Emergency Banking Relief Act
Authorized the government to examine the finances of banks closed during the bank holiday and reopen those judged to be sound
