Gravity and force vectors Flashcards
Law of universal gravitation
Every body attracts every other body with a force that, for any two bodies, is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance separating them
Force = (mass 1 x mass 2) / distance^2
Universal gravitational constant
G
- the proportionality form of the universal law of gravitation can be expressed as an exact equation when the constant G is introduced
F = G [(m1m2) / d^2]
G
Identical to the magnitude of the force between a pair of 1kg masses that are 1 meter apart
G = 6.67 x 10 - 11 N x m^2 / kg^2
G facts
- the value of G is very weak
- the force of attraction between you and the earth can be measured (your weight)
- you weight depends on your distance form the center of the earth (further away = lees weight)
Inverse-square law
Relates the intensity of an effort to the inverse square of the distance from the cause
Intensity ~ 1/d^2
- gravity follows this law.
- gravitational force approaches zero the further away from th earth you get, but it never reaches zero
