Gravitation Fields Flashcards
Equipotential Definition
Imaginary surface in a gravitational field which is the locus of all points with the same potential
Extra - if you put dots above the earth at the same gravitational potential . The equipotential line is connecting up all these dots
Gravitational Field Definition
Objects with mass create an invisible disturbance in the space around them that is felt by other massive objects
NKg-1
Potential Gradients definition
The change of potential per metre at a point
NKgm-1
How are Potential Gradient and Field Strength linked?
g=-v/m
Newton’s 3 assumptions
Gravity is;
- Always an attractive force
- Proportional to the product of the two masses
- Inversley proportional to r sqaured
Field Definition
An area around an entity or object that can exert an affect on another body by virtue of it being there
3 Types of Fields
Gravitational Fields - affect masses placed in them
Electrical Fields - affect electrical charges placed in it
Magnetic Fields - fields that affect magnetic dipoles
Newtons law of gravity
All massed exert attractive forces on all other masses. Near the earth this force is almost entirely an attraction to earth so if something is dropped to falls towards the centre of the earth
Graviational Potential Definition
The Work done per unit mass to move a small object from infinity to that point
