Grasp Flashcards
exploratory - First voluntary grasp begins between 2 and 3 months. Infant squeezes object with all fingers, thumb does not participate. Release is random, without voluntary control. Grasp is inefficient and infant cannot move object in hand
3 - 5 mo
Perceptual learning/transitional stage - Radial palmar and radial digital grasping patterns emerge. Infant actively uses thumb to grasp objects. Infant is unable to move an object within his hands but can transfer hand to hand and explore in his mouth. Voluntary release begins at 6-7 months. Infant awkwardly grasps small objects
6 - 12 mo
skill achievement/adaptability & flexibility - By 12 months, infant demonstrates a pincer grasp; this grasp is precise by 18 months. By 18 months, demonstrates precision release. By 2 years, grasp is dynamic, allowing tool use; the child can use an object while holding it (toothbrush, spoon). Blended grasping patterns develop, the child can move and object while maintaining his grasp of the object.
12 - 24 mo
