Graphing Gr.9 Flashcards
Which axis is the Dependent Variable plotted on?
The y axis.
Which axis is the Independent Variable plotted on?
The x axis.
Distance / Time or Time / Distance?
Distance / Time.
What is the Rate of Change?
The rate of change describes how much a quantity changes relative to another quantity. Examples: 40 m/s, 5 gal/min, or 140 ft/min
Rate of change formula when initial value is 0
Dependent / Independent
Rate of change formula when initial value is not 0
Diff y divided by Diff x
How do we know if a graph is linear?
If the first differences are the same, the relationship is linear. Example: If the x axis always increases by 5 and the y axis always increases by 3
How do we know if a graph is non-linear?
If the first differences are not the same, the relationship is non-linear. Example: If the x axis increases like this: 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and if the y axis increases like this: 0, 3, 8, 19, 27.
Is y = 2x^2 linear?
No
Is y = 5x + 3 linear?
Yes!
