Q

State one advantage that pictorial line drawings have over CAD illustrations

A
This type of graphic is more
informative than the 3D CAD
illustration
 It lets the viewer see how the
product is assembled
 It lets the viewer see all the
component parts of the product.

A
 The graphic can be used for
promotional/marketing reasons.
 The graphic can aid discussions
with the client prior to
manufacture.
 This type of graphic is more
universally understood.
 This type of graphic is more
easily understood by nontechnical

Q

Explain in terms of environmental impact, why careful consideration of the layout of multiple parts is important

A

a reduction
of waste materials or manufacturing process may release C02 which is harmful to the environment and a wrong part will need the production process to start all over again

Q

How would a postcard create impact?

A
 Create impact – Bold/Bright/Vivid

Q

How would you encourage further exploration of a product?

A
Encourage further exploration of
the product – minimal information
provided to entice consumers;
silhouette graphics of chair do not
give a complete picture/
understanding of the product.
Website/URL is provided.

Q

How would a postcard provide basic details of function?

A
Provide basic details of function -
abstract graphics of the ‘matching
system’ (triangle, square and
hexagon) and pictorial view of
corner bracket hint at the
products function. Text on back of
postcard gives information on
function.

Q

How would a postcard make their advertising non-gender specific

A
 Appeal to a target audience of 18-
40 year old males and females,
font styles, non-gender specific
colour choice and simple graphics
appeal to both genders and age
group. None of the graphic
elements mentioned above
exclude any section of the target
market based on gender or age.

Q

How would a company create a modern layout on advertisement cards

A
Create a modern feel to the layout
- background and graphics bleed
to edges, minimal/simple overall

Q

Describe two advantages that an electronic promotional item gives the company over traditional promotional items

A
Is capable of reaching a larger
target audience
 Post production editing is possible
 The electronic item can be
adapted or expanded at a later
date.
 Can impart more information
about the product to the viewer.
 Hyperlinks to other aspects of the
company can be included
 Ability to interact with the
electronic promotional item
 No printing costs
 No waste of printing materials
 Flexibility to send/share in a
number of ways.
 Transport costs.
17
Q

Explain how the production of an app can be simplified by having the graphic elements already digitally produced

A
Graphic elements can be dragged
and dropped if the programs used
are compatible.
 Having the elements already
created saves time and effort.
 Font matching is easier
 Colour matching is easier
 Editing is possible of pre-existing
graphics
18
Q

State two reasons why thumbnail sketches would be produced during the
preliminary stages.

A

Generate ideas quickly
• Generate a range of ideas
• Allow for evaluation of ideas
• Ideas can be shared with the client

19
Q

Explain three advantages to the graphic designer of using DTP software
to produce a graphic layout.

A

Layer function can be used to overlap elements
• Ease of editing
• Images can be manipulated
• Variety of fonts are available to try
• Grid/guide tools can be used to enable accurate alignment of elements
• Speed of production
• Layouts and files can be sent long distances via email, remote working
share with client
• Wide range of colour schemes available
• Access to a wide range of media
• Layout would be more accurate

20
Q

How would you create depth?

A

Overlapping of various elements
• Faded background image appears further away
• Drop shadow on the pictorial gives illusion of depth

21
Q

How would you create dominance?

A

Focal point is created by large exploded view
• Bold and capitalised text
• Faded image recedes and makes the exploded view more dominant
(2 marks for identification and justification)
• Smaller images are scaled down to make the focal point more dominant
(2 marks for identification and justification)

22
Q

How would you create alignment?

A

Vertical alignment of heading with other written content makes the
layout feel organised and structured (2 marks for identification and
justification)
• Horizontal/central alignment of heading with small icons and/or
horizontal green line also makes the page appear structured and
organised (2 marks for identification and justification)

23
Q

Describe why a graphic designer would use a desktop publishing technique “transparency”

A

Transparency can be used to make sure the background graphic does not distract from the main focus of the promotional item

24
Q

Describe the positive impact to the environment of using a web page rather than printed posters to promote the product.

A

No ink would be used
• No paper would be used
• No surplus of posters would be wasted
• No transport required to take posters around the country/world
• Only consumers interested in the product would use a webpage

25
Q

Describe two ways a designer can reduce the impact the packaging has on the environment.

A

Make packaging from recyclable/biodegradable materials
• Make packaging from recycled materials
• Reduce the amount of material used for packaging
• Environmentally friendly inks
• Limit amount of ink being used
• Reusable packaging
• Highlight recyclability of materials
• Efficient layout of multiple parts when manufacturing

26
Q

State one factor that would influence the choice of scale in a drawing.

A

Size of media
• Size of object
• Level of detail
• Drawing type

27
Q

Advantages of using DTP

A

Documents can be produced more quickly and accurately
Images and documents can be easily edited
Layouts, files and documents can be sent quickly over long distances via the
internet
The user can work from home
It is easy and efficient to communicate with the client

28
Q

Disadvantages of using DTP?

A

Computer files can be easily lost or stolen
Computers can fall victim to viruses, malfunction or power failure
It is initially time consuming and expensive to train staff to use new software

29
Q

Advantages of 3D modelling?

A

3D models can be produced more quickly and cheaply than physical ones
The designs can be very easily modified and several variations can be quickly produced
Designs can be sent around the world quickly via the internet

30
Q

Disadvantages of 3D modelling?

A

The software required is initially expensive and training staff to use it is time consuming
Computer failure, viruses and theft can result in lost work
The model cannot be physically handled

31
Q

What are line graphs used for?

A

Line Graphs are used to show how values change over a period of time.

32
Q

What are pie charts used for?

A

Pie Charts are used to show how values compare to some whole number.

33
Q

What are bar charts used for?

A

Bar Charts are used to show how values compare directly against other values.

34
Q

What is grid snap?

What does it do?

A

Grid snap only allows the cursor to follow the corners of the squares on the box.
This allows drawings to be produced quickly and accurately

35
Q

What does CAD library do?

A

A CAD library allows frequently used symbols like sockets or doors to be selected from a pre-drawn
catalogue and placed anywhere on the drawing.
This saves the user time and effort.
The library is a series of standardised components that are drawn to British Standards and save users
time by placing them in drawings
They can be easily edited and scaled.
