Graphics Design and Ethics Module Flashcards
Need
vague set of wishes expressing that customers would like product to do for them
Customer Requirements
expression on desired behaviour of product, consists of objectives, constraints, and functions
Functions
engineering actions that product will perform, how product adresses problem
Objectives
an attribute or behaviour that design should have or exhibit
Constraints
limit ur restriction on the designs behaviour and attributes (hard yes/no)
Intellectual Property
creations of the mind, protected by IP
Types of IP
Copyright - text images, video, audios
Trademarks- words, logos, pictures
Patents- inventions of new products, process, or improvements
Industrial Design - ornamental elements of new product
Purpose of Patent
others cannot make, sell, or distribute invention without permission and patent holder can seek damages in case of infringement
Criteria for Patentibility
Novelty- the first of its kind
Utility - must work and have useful function
Inventiveness - new invention or improvement on existing technology
Divergent Thinking
solving problem through a multiplicity of possible solutions
Convergent Thinking
bringing together different ideas from different participants to determine a single best solution
Empathy
The ability to understand an experience thoughts, feelings and emotions of someone else
Safety
Freedom from accidents or losses
Risk
probably rate of a hazarrd causing harm, and the degree of severity of the harm
Classification of Medical Devices
Invasive Devices
Non-Invasive Devices
Active Devices
Other Devices
Class I Medical Device
not life sustaining, failure poses no risk to life
e.g surgical or dental instrument
Class II Medical Device
not life sustaining, failure poses no risk to life, but must meet standards ofd accuracy and reproducibility
e.g denture implants
Class III Medical Device
sustaining or supporting life; ionizing devices
e.g dialysis system
Class IV Medical Device
sustaining or supporting life; failure is life threatening
e.g pacemaker
what is an engineer?
a person who uses science, math, experience, judgement to create, operate, manage, control, or maintain devices, mechanisms, processes, structures, or complex systems and who does this in a rational and economic way subject to human, societal and environmental constraint
Professional
a person who posesses specialized knowledge that requires education and study; a member of the profession
PEO
provincially legislated, self-governing, manages the P. Eng
Responsibilities of the PEO
administers and enforces the professional engineer’s act of Ontario, and licenses and disciplines engineers and engineering firms
Law vs. Ethics
law is a system of rules created and enforced through government institutions, and ethics is the philosophical study of morality
