Q

How can you construct a polar graph?

A

Using a compass and a protractor, draw in lines that correspond to the compass directions

Draw a scale - scale relates to the radius of the diagram, e.g 1cm can represent 10 cars - Circles are drawn at 1cm radius

Mark the scale on the vertical axis

Plot the data

A

Gives a good visual representation of the data
Shows trends in terms of direction and volume

Q

What are the disadvantages of a scattergraph?

A

Only allows for the relationship between 2 variables to be displayed

Too much data can be difficult to read

Correlation can emerge even when a relationship is only coincidental

Q

What are the disadvantages of a pie chart?

Q

What are the advantages of a dispersion diagram?

A

The data range is easily identifiable

Clustering can be seen clearly

Box/Whisker plots can be added to further analyse data, which increases geographical understanding

Q

What are the advantages of a dispersion diagram?

A

The data range is easily identifiable

Clustering can be seen clearly

Box/Whisker plots can be added to further analyse data, which increases geographical understanding

18
Q

What are the disadvantages of a dispersion diagram?

A

Doesn’t show a causative relationship as only one variable is plotted

No key used, so doesn’t allow for investigation of data over time/space

19
Q

When should you use a dispersion diagram?

A

Allows you to investigate visually the spread of a set of data

20
Q

What are the advantages of a triangular graph?

A

Very useful if three components are to be compared

Dominant variable can be seen

After plotting, clusters emerge which enables identifying trends

21
Q

What are the disadvantages of a triangular graph?

A

Hard to interpret

Limited range of data can be used

Must be broken down into 3 components expressed as percentages

Cannot be used for absolute data

22
Q

When should you use a triangluar graph?

A

When investigating data that has three components - e.g occupation in the primary, secondary or tertiary sector

Position of dot indicates the dominance of each of the three components making patterns easy to identify

23
Q

What are the advantages of a population pyramaid?

A

Clear shows the population structure of a country

Gives accurate data

24
Q

What are the disadvantages of a population pyramid?

A

Can be difficult to contruct

25
Q

What are the advantages of a desire line?

A

Can show both volume and direction of movement

Can be put on to a map to show extra information

26
Q

What are the disadvantages of a desire line?

A

Some simplification needed - e.g doesn’t show whether journeys deviate

Doesn’t help explain why the pattern occurs

27
Q

What are the advantages of a flow line?

A

Can show both volume and direction of movement

Visually effective

28
Q

What are the disadvantages of a flow line?

A

Calculation actual values may be difficult

Some simplification needed - e.g doesn’t show if journeys deviate

29
Q

What are the advantages of proportional symbols?

A

Easy to read as each symbol is proportional to its value

Visually effective

30
Q

What are the disadvantages of proportional symbols?

A

Takes a long time to construct

Calculation of actual values may be difficult

31
Q

What are the advantages of a choropleth map?

A

Gives good visual impression of change over space

Allows easy comparisons in data between areas

32
Q

What are the disadvantages of a choropleth map?

A

Grade boundaries you use can affect the pattern it produces

Can be difficult to tell the differences between shades of colour

33
Q

When should you use a choropleth map/

A

When you show interval data - which is linked rather than from different categories.

They are shaded - where darker shades represent high numbers and lighter shades represent low numbers

34
Q

What are the advantages of dot maps?

A

Located accurately on a map

The number and density of dots clearly shows the information on the map

35
Q

What are the disadvantages of dot maps?

A

Can be difficult to find accurate information

Easy to under or over estimate the number of dots in an area

36
Q

When should you use a dot map?

A

When you might represent more than one of something - often used to show population distribution

37
Q

What are the advantages of isoline maps?

A

Patterns can easily be seen

Shows gradual changes over a large area

38
Q

What are the disadvantages of isoline maps?

A

Needs a large amount of data from a large area to be accurate

Hard to construct can be subjective

39
Q

What do isolines connect?

A

They are drawn to link different places that share a common value. Isoline must join equal points

40
Q

What are contour lines?

A

Are isolines that join places with same height values
