Panel
Refers to framed image, offers reader a perspective or point of view on subjects, sometimes no borders to create unique effect.
Splash
Panel that is the bigger than usual regular panels, used to emphasise point shown on the panel
Voiceover
Can speak directly to readers, done with hard line separating narrator speech at top or bottom of panel from image within panel
Speech Bubble
Framers around character’s language, use of direct speech where characters speak, if in cloud then shows characters thoughts. If in jagged lines, shows character speech
Emanata
Refers to tear drops, sweat marks, motion lines, frown lines to portray emotions of a character
Gutter
Refers to space between panels, used for readers to imagine what happens in between
Style
Drawing style of artists, 4 scales of style:
- Complex to single
- Realistic to idonic
- Objective to subjective
- Specific to universal
narration
Mix of direct and indirect narration to involved show not tell.
Foreground
The subject or point of focus, if subject seems closer to reader in front of scene depicted. Character in foreground
Midground
If in middle of scene depicted, known as midground placing subject off centre used to create visual tension.
Background
Object in background, helps add contextual info for readers, usually not main character
Camera Angle
Where camera of image would stand, long, medium or close up shot. What angle the camera pitched: Birds eye, eye level, low angle. effects reader’s understanding of subject
Transition:
Refers to closure when reader mentally fills in gap in gutter between panels
Movement To Movement
Transitions show basic movements occuring
Action to Action
Transitions show single subject progressing through a specific movement
