FORMAT NOT GENRE
Persepolis is a personal narritive (genre) graphic novel (format)
Panels
A distinct comic segment that
contains a variaty of images and text
Frame
Lines/borders that contain/surround the panels
Gutter
The space between framed pannels
Bleed
An image that extends beyond a page/pannel
Closure
The act of having to fill in the gaps between what we see from pannel to pannel
Captions
Boxes Containing the scene/setting descriptions
Usually written from the present (while speech bubbles are in the past)
Speech Bubbles
speech ballons that contain dialog/thoughts
external or internal
often in the past
Special Effect Lettering
Onomatopoeias
Used to reinforce moments/words via text
(POW!, BANG! etc.)
Graphic Weight
The way in witch some images/pannels draw more attention than others
Often caused by contrast, patterns/repeated marks, color use, more brilliant colors
Foreground
the front of the pannel
contians the most detail
Midground
Middle of the panel
Details are still in focus but are slightly more vauge
Background
Back of pannel
Contains blurred colors/ details
Little to no details
Faces
Can be drawn in detail (mona lisa) or can use a making effect (persepolis)
Faces:
Masking Effect
when a charecter’s face is simply drawn
allows for readers to see themselves in the charecter, rather than be focused on all the details (universiality)
