1000 microns thick
weight of tracing paper
60gsm
properties of paper:
Flexible Rigid Transparent Translucent Opaque
A sheet of newly developed paper is 4 metres squared and has a mass of 200g. Calculate its weight in gsm.
50gsm
Weight = Mass of sheet ÷Area of sheet= answer(gsm)
why use wood or plants for paper and board?
wood gives the best results because it produces strong cellulose fibres.
Plants have cellulose fibres used to make papers and boards.
What wood is used for paper and board?
Both deciduous and coniferous trees can be used
hardwood vs. softwood
Hardwood produces short fibres - softwoods produce long fibres which are stronger.
Fast growing trees such as spruce and fir are the most commonly used softwoods.
what is paper and board made out of?
Bamboo, Cotton, Flax, Hemp, Straw, Sugarcane, Wood
Paper is made from fibrous materials
Anything that is fibrous can be made into a form of paper – even elephant dung
An elephant eats 250kg of food each day which results in 50kg of dung
This produces roughly 125 sheets of paper
What are some Paper Sizes?
A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6 ect.
A6 is half of A5 and A5 is half of A4 and so on
What is ‘virgin pulp’?
The majority of paper we use is still made from ‘virgin pulp’ which comes from managed forests
How is paper made?
The papermaking industry requires vast quantities of trees
Mature wood of 20+ years old, is better for pulping than juvenile wood
Once a tree is cut down, it goes to a mill where it is processed
What happens to the images as they get further from the vanishing point?
they appear distorted
What is the horizon line?
where the sky meets the land
What happens to the images as they get further away?
Distant figures appear smaller but have the same shape and proportions as they would close up.
all lines need to…
All lines converge to the vanishing point
if there is a line of trees they will get bigger or smaller?
The trees will be bigger the closer they are to the viewer
