Graph Translation Flashcards
What is
Graph Translation?
The movement of a graph of a function about the x or y axes
Taking the original function f(x), what is
f(x) + 3
Movement three units up the y axis
Taking the original function f(x), what is
f(x) - 3
Movement three units down the y axis
Taking the original function f(x), what is
f(x - 3)
Movement three units to the RIGHT on the x axis
Note the subtle difference
Taking the original function f(x), what is
f(x + 3)
Movement three units to the LEFT on the x axis
Note the subtle difference
Taking the original function f(x), what is
- f(x)
A reflection of the graph of the function about the x axis
Flipping it upside down
Taking the original function f(x), what is
f(-x)
A reflection of the graph of the function about the y axis
Flipping it laterally
Taking the original function f(x), what is
2f(x)
A vertical stretch of the graph of the function by a factor of 2 along the y axis
Graph becomes longer
Taking the original function f(x), what is
0.5f(x)
A vertical compression of the graph of the function by a factor of 2 along the y axis
Graph becomes shorter
Taking the original function f(x), what is
f(2x)
A horizontal compression of the graph of the function by a factor of 2 along the x axis
Graph becomes more packed
Taking the original function f(x), what is
f(0.5x)
A horizontal stretch of the graph of the function by a factor of 2 along the x axis
Graph becomes more spread out
