GRAPH DESIGN CHAP 6 Flashcards
What are the options for accepting an image?
You can accept the image as is or alter it (change the color, crop, silhouette, posterize, texturize, paint).
What are the 3 visualizing techniques?
- Rendering
- Sketches
- Elemental flat shape
What should you consider when selecting stock imagery?
You accept the image as is or alter it (change the color, crop, silhouette, posterize, texturize, paint).
What is an Elemental Flat Shape?
A basic shape rendering of a form using flat colors or neutrals.
What is Rendering?
Drawing to define three-dimensional spaces or objects.
What are Margins?
The blank space surrounding an image to frame it and provide space for page numbers, running heads, notations, captions, headings, and titles.
What considerations should be made when designing an icon?
Who is the audience? At what size will the icons be seen? What is the context? What are the communication goals?
What are the 3 basic classifications of depiction?
- Representational
- Abstraction
- Nonobjective
What is Representational depiction?
A rendering attempting to replicate actual things seen in nature.
What is Abstraction?
A simple or complex rearrangement of the representation of natural appearance used for stylistic distinction or communication purposes.
What is Nonobjective depiction?
A purely invented image that is not derived from anything visually perceived.
What are various ways images can be classified?
- Linear
- Contour
- Notation
- Silhouette
- Expressionistic
- Pictograph
- Light and Shadow
- Naturalistic
What is Linear classification?
Line as the predominant element used to unify a composition.
What is Contour classification?
A shape or form depicted through the linear outline of an object’s boundaries.
What is Notation classification?
A linear, reductive visual that captures the essence of its subject.
What is Silhouette classification?
The articulated shape of an object taking its specificity into account.
What is Expressionistic classification?
A style of visualization characterized by a highly stylized or subjective interpretation.
What is Pictograph classification?
An elemental, universal picture denoting an object, place, or person captured through shape.
What is Light and Shadow classification?
Employed to describe the three-dimensional appearance of form and the illusion of spatial depth.
What is Naturalistic classification?
Using light and shadow that attempts to replicate an object as it is perceived in nature.
What is Image appropriation?
The practice of artists using pre-existing objects or images in their art with little transformation of the original.
What is the difference between a sign and a symbol in graphic design?
Sign: a visual mark or a part of language that denotes another thing.
Symbol: an image that has an arbitrary or conventional relationship between the signifier and the thing signified.
What is an Icon?
A pictorial image or symbol used to represent objects, actions, and concepts.
What are some icon design tips?
- Accurately depict the shape of an object.
- Aim for elemental form.
- Select commonly recognizable images.
- Treat all icons in a system consistently.
