Grape Variety Flashcards
This is a thick-skinned, late ripening international variety that grows in moderate to hot climates. It has an abundance of color, flavor, tannin (and usually) acid. Flavors include blackcurrant, blackberry and lends itself well to oak
Cabernet Sauvignon
This red grape performs well in cold and moderate climates. It can be herbaceous when underripe, but contributes vibrant fruit and floral notes when young. It has less body and tannin than its famous offspring
Cabernet Franc
This early budding, early ripening international red variety can either be intense, concentrated blackberry and plum with softer tannin, or picked earlier to produce a wine with medium body and more red fruit.
Merlot
This high acid, aromatic international white grape is famous for its herbaceousness
Sauvignon Blanc
This neutral white grape adds body and is picked early in the Hunter valley and attacked by Botrytis in Sauternes
Semillon
This lesser known white grape plays a supporting role where it has pronounced grapey, floral character
Muscadelle
This less aromatic international grape variety can ripen almost anywhere with its flavors changing drastically depending on the climate. It handles MLF and lees aging well
Chardonnay
This early budding, early ripening red grape is famous for its finicky nature, thin skin, complex red fruit and earthiness
Pinot Noir
This early budding, early ripening red variety offers fragrant wines with raspberry and cherry. Medium Tannin and body or lower. Uncommon outside of France
Gamay
This famous aromatic international grape variety has more than enough acid to support residual sugar and is one of the rare white grapes that can age very well
Riesling
The best of this international white variety (with pink skins) are full bodied, rich, and high in alcohol. They can have pronounced flavors of fresh and dried fruit, and honey
Pinot Gris
This white variety (with pink skins) is renowned for its pungent aromatic spicy nose of lychees, roses and baking spices. Full bodied, rich, oily with lower acid levels and high alcohol
Gewurztraminer
This famous grape is intensely aromatic with flavors of orange blossom, rose and grape. Wines have medium body with low to medium acidity
Muscat
This early ripening variety is frost resistant and suited to cool climates. the wines have high acidity, a light body, subtle green character and often have a sur lie character
Melon Blanc
This high acid, non aromatic grape variety can produce wines that are dry, sweet, still, or sparkling (and everything in between). The style often depends on when it is harvested
Chenin Blanc
This tannic international red grape has small berries, thick skins and will not ripen in cool climates. Cooler climates result in pepper and fresh black fruit; warmer climates are full bodied with very ripe black fruits
Syrah
This thin skinned, late ripening variety needs a warm or hot climate to ripen. It provides high alcohol, low acidity, full body, soft tannins and red fruit flavors
Grenache
This red grape needs heat to ripen. It is deeply colored, very high in tannins and can produce dense black fruits, gamey and meaty aromas. Works well with other red grapes
Mourvedre
