Granuloma Flashcards
What is peripheral giant cell granuloma and how does it present?
Reactive hyperplastic lesion
- Soft tissue purple/blueish/reddish nodule
- contains large multinucleated giant cells
Cause of PGCG?
Thought to be local irritation
- plaque
- overhanging restorations
- trauma
Aetiology of PGCG?
Mandible >
Women >
30-40>
What is oral Pyogenic granuloma?
Soft and often painless mass in oral cavity
- deep red to purple colour
- non lobulated mass of angiomatous tissue
- capillary proliferation
Tx pyogenic granuloma?
Surgical excision
- debridement of underlying tissue with 2mm margins
- any foreign body, calculus or defective restorations removed too
What is central giant cell granuloma?
Benign aggressive osteolytic neoplasm of maxfacial region
- multinucleated giant cells
CGCG = within jaw bone
PGCG = not in jaw bone
Histology pyogenic granuloma?
Multinucleated giant cells
- background of plump ovoid and spindle shaped mesenchymal cells
Aetiology CGCG
Mandible >
- body anterior to first molars
Age < 30
Female >
Can be consequence of parathyroid tumour
Clinical presentation of CGCG?
Asymptomatic
Or
Rapid hollowing of bone
- cortical expansion
- root resorption
- displacement of adjacent tissues
- pain
