Why is a grant needed? State for executor and administrator
executor: to confirm authority to distribute the estate
administrator: to give authority to distribute estate
What is needed for all grant applications? (2)
- online application or paper form (PA1A or PA1P)
- application fee
What assets do not require a grant to be distributed? (2)
- personal possessions and cash found in home
- assets which fall outside the distribution estate:
a. jointly held
b. discretionary pension
c. life policy written in trust
d. other nominated assets
e. DMC
f. interest held in trust

When would you use the letter of administration (with will)?
There is a valid will but no executors able or willing to act
When would you use the letter of administration?
no valid will
When would you use the grant of probate?
valid will and executors have been appointed who are willing/able to act
