Grant and Zeichner Flashcards
what is routine action?
behaviour that is guided by impulse, tradition or authority
what is reflective action?
behaviour that involves active, persistent and careful consideration of any belief or practice in light of the grounds that support it and the further consequences to which it leads
what are the 3 attitudes that are pre-requisites for reflective action?
- Open mindedness
- Responsibility
- Whole- Heartedness
what is open mindedness?
- an active desire to listen to more sides than one and to give full attention to alternate possibilities with room for error in the beliefs that are dearest to us
what is responsibility?
- involves careful consideration of the consequences to which an action leads
what is the hidden curriculum? and what is an example you learned in school?
- norms (rules that you follow), values, and procedures (recess, lunch, disciplining)
- ex: sitting in your desk and being quiet
what is wholeheartedness?
- the fact that open-mindedness and responsibility must be central components in the life of the reflective teacher and implies that prospective teachers who are reflective must take active control over their education as teachers
What are some traits of wholeheartedness?
- as a teacher you do not hesitate or forget to fight for your beliefs and for equality for everyone
- Reflective teachers are dedicated to teaching all students and not just certain students
- your teaching behaviour is a manifestation of your teaching philosophy
is reflective teaching a realistic and/or desirable goal?
- yes b/c it’s important to be reflective so you can apply the knowledge and skills gained in your preparation for teaching to situations that may be very different from those you have experienced during your training
is it possible to take the time to reflect?
-teachers don’t have time to reflect b/c of the quick action and the press of institutional demands. Intuitiveness is an adaptive response and consequence of the fast paced unpredictable nature of classroom life and is necessary for teachers to be able to negotiate classroom demands
is it possible to act on the results of reflection?
even if teachers do reflect on the purpose and consequences of their actions, they are not able to act on the results of their inquiries if the desired course of action is in conflict w/ the dominant institutional norms of their school
is it necessary to reflect?
- it is not necessary to reflect in order to be an effective teacher
- if there is more we can do as teachers to make our schools better, than we need to play an integral role in this process
List 3 points of how to become a reflective teacher
- becoming a reflective teacher is a continuous process of growth
- you examine the many predispositions that u bring w/ you into formal prep for teaching
- remember to always be critical and reflective about that which is presented to you and that which has been omitted
