Explain 2 sociological reasons why grandparents are increasingly involved in caring for their grandchildren

Women in the workplace:
➞ ONS - 72% of women working
➞ due to Wilkinson’s genderquake and the need for dual-earner families as expensive economy.
➞ Chester says we now have the neo-conventional nuclear family as women tend to have careers, therefore need grandparents to look after children
Increased cost of childcare:
➞ parents becoming dual earning families due to expenses of children (£200,000) + housing etc, results in childcare
➞ Study by Employers for Childcare, in NI, found ave cost of childcare was £166 / week
➞ study by RIAS 2012, found 5.8 million grandparents look after grandchildren
Increase in divorced / lone parents
