Q

Describe the aspect in the Grand Vallee?

A

The grand Vallee is a south facing slope on the north side of the Marne River. It really isn’t a valley as the city of Epernay is on the southern side of the river. The valley truly begins when you reach Damery. Damery is the town just past Cumieres. (The Gateway to the Grand Vallee’)

Q

What is the soil structure in the Grand Vallee?

A

In most of the Grand Vallee, the soils are more similar to the Cote des Blancs and Montagne de Reims. Cretaceous chalky bedrock with a marl topsoil. You can find limestone, and different clays as well.

As you travel west towards the Vallee de la Marne proper the chalky bedrock goes deeper and deeper and you can find different types of limestone and Marls dominating.
