challenge - he isn’t a burden, he is able to look after himself, has a lot to contribute, is beneficial, he is flexible and allows for change within himself, not family orientated
belief examples
isolation - mid shot shows he is alienated from his family, they are grouped together and he sits alone, his body is turned away from children, the children aren’t sad, grandchildren are bored
not family orientated - “i have more in common with these gooks then my own spoilt rotten family’ he judges his family as they walk into the church, close up face to show disgust and disapproval of his granddaughter close up of her middrift and belly piercing, he is alone on his birthday, he kicks his family out, he doesn’t sit with them, shuts them out
beneficial - ‘get off my lawn’ saves sue, puts his own life at risk for the benefit of sue and thao and the society, low camera angle of gang showing dominance, high angle of walt showing vulnerability, dark lighting to represent sin, military drums showing he is there to fight, slow motion of him falling in christ like pose. washes his own car. big phone shows stereotypical view of old people how he challenges it he doesn’t need or want help

reading - positive view towards old people rather then presenting them as incapable showing that they still have a lot to contribute within society
intro context
gran torino is a drama movie released in 2008 by clint eastwood which explores the story of the western hero, walt whois able to overcome his racial prejudice towards the hmong culture driven by his veteran history of the korean war and his defeat over the savage gang that terrorises detroit, ultimately providing a happy society with restored order

- mostly in line with the traditional western genre however adjusted to contemporary modern audience

films have the ability to raise relevant issues within society, furthermore, these issues both challenge and endorse our beliefs of a modern society
genre - plot
- ‘westerner comes to a town filled with savagery, saves it then leaves’
- walt, the gunman, the westerner lives there is whole life is watching his neighbors innocent lives be harmed by gangs decides to protect them
- ‘western hero face danger alone, saves damsel in distress’
- ‘hero emphasises the importance of sacrifice’
- sacrificing his own life for them
- physically murdered by the gang, he metaphorically killed them through strategic unarmed confrontation that attracted witnesses resulting in them being placed in prison.

- walts actions freed the innocents restoring order just as a typical western
