A tense made by combining two different verbs
Compound tense
Changing the verb to agree with the subject
e.g. أعمل (I work)
يعمل (he works)
Conjugation
A variation of the Arabic verbal root which modifies the meaning
Derived Form
A verb that has the same second and third root letter
Doubled Verb
A verb that has a ء as one of the root letters
Hamzated verb
A mood or variation of the present tense which is used for commands or instructions
Imperative
A verb that varies from the normal patterns
Irregular Verbs
A mood or variation of the present tense used in certain structures
Jussive
A word for naming a person, object or idea
Noun
A verb where the subject undergoes the action of the verb, rather than carries out the action.
e.g. وُلِدَ (He was born)
Passive
A verb showing something has happened in the past
Past tense
Used when referring to two people or things
Dual
Used when referring to three or more things
Plural
A verb showing something is happening now, routinely or in the future
Present/Future tense
A word replacing a noun
e.g. هي (she)
هو (he)
Pronoun
A verb with a four letter root
e.g. يترجم (to translate)
Quadrilateral Verb
The sequence of Arabic letters (usually three) that carry the underlying meaning of a word.
Root
A mood or variation of the present tense used after certain particles
Subjunctive
Indicates when the action of a verb takes place
Tense
A word describing an action or state of being
Verb
What is added to the end of a verb stem to get the proper conjugation
Verb Ending
A noun formed from a verb describing a state or action
e.g. اِجتِماع (meeting)
سِباحة (swimming)
Verbal Noun
What is added to the beginning of the verb stem to get the proper conjugation
Verb Prefix
The part of the verb that endings and prefixes are added to
e.g. فعل
Verb Stem
A verb that has a ي or و as one of the root letters
Weak Verb
A root with ي or و as the first root letter
Assimilated Root
A root with ي or و as the second root letter
Hollow Root
A root with ي or و as the third root letter
