Gerund
A verb ending in -ing that functions as a noun. For example, a gerund may be used as a subject, a direct object, an object of a preposition, or as a predicate nominative.
Gerund Sentence
Jogging is ver popular. (Subject)
Infinitives
A verb form that usually begins with the word to and functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb. An infinitive phrase consists of the infinitive plus its modifiers and complements. Infinitive phrases function in the same way as infinitives.
Infinitive Sentence
To win an Olympic medal is the dream of many athletes. (Noun)
Participles
A verb form that functions as an adjective. A participle phrase consists of a participle plus its modifiers and complements. The entire phrase functions as an adjective.
Participles Sentence
Soothed by the music, Linda fell asleep in her chair. (Adjective, duh)
