Q

How do you form a basic “main clause” in German?

A

A main clause in German is an independent clause that serves as a standalone idea.

It is formed with a subject, verb, and object, though this order is not necessary. The one rule is that the finite verb must come in the “second position.”

-Der Mann beißt den Hund.
- The man bites the dog.

Q

How do you form a “main clause” with verbal complement?

A

Main clauses can also have verbal complements. In this case, the sentence will develop a “sentence bracket” in which the second-position finite verb and end-position verbal complement are filled in with the rest of the sentence.
