what does a simple sentence contain
a
one clause, single main verb and a subject, object, complement, adverbial (some or all)
what does a compound sentence contain
two or more simple sentences joined by a coordinating conjunction each with their own importance
what are the four sentence functions
declarative
interrogative
imperative
exclamatory
what is morphology
study of structure of words, how root words become pluralised, change tenses, change word class
what are affixes
added to a root word
can be prefix or suffix
types of affixes
inflectional-indicate a plural, possession or tense (run runs ran runner)
derivational-create new words (hotter hottest and hotly)
what does grammatical cohesion include
reference, identification, ellipsis and conjunction
what is identification
use of determiner such as the to refer to a noun that had been previously mentioned ( a ship arrived i pointed out the ship)
what is anaphoric and cataphoric reference?
anaphoric- use a pronoun to refer back to something thats been established
cataphoric- use a pronoun to refer back to something yet to be established
what is ellipsis
elements omitted from a sentence ( a biit of a mess instead of it was a bit of a mess)
