used to define or name something
Either to give definitions and names (N1 defines N2)
ロボットという言葉がうまれたのは、1920年のことだ
(The word robot was created in 1920)
Or to indicate that the speaker thinks the listener doesn’t know something about N1
昨日、田中さん「という」人が来ました
のは。。。だ
To give prominence to something in a sentence
Seperate what you want to emphasise - change は to が
Add のは - finish sentence
子供たちが好きな「のは」カレーライスです

In the capacity of, in the name of, being seen as
