Noun
A word that names a person, place or thing.
Common nouns
Name all people or things of the same kind.
Proper nouns
Name particular people, places or things.
Abstract nouns
Name feelings or ideas.
Collective nouns
Name collections of people or things.
Pronouns
Words that take the place of nouns (she, it, theirs, etc)
Verbs
Words that describe actions or activities.
Adjectives
Words that describe nouns.
Adverbs
Words that describe verbs.
Prepositions
Words that show relationships, for example, of place and time. They go before nouns and pronouns.
Conjunctions
Words that join ideas - within or between sentences.
Phrases
Group of words that DON’T contain a verb.
Clauses
Group of words that DO contain a verb.
Independent clauses
Clauses that DO make sense by themselves.
Dependent clauses
Clauses that DON’T make sense by themselves.
Subjects
Person or thing that the sentence is about.
